Paid Dance Video Production Internship

Phoenix Metro Area  |  Fall 2026–Spring 2027  |  $20/hour

Dances With Tech is looking for 1–2 paid film interns who are genuinely passionate about dance and want hands-on, long-term training in filming live performance and movement.

I’m looking to hire as soon as possible for upcoming fall productions, but I’m also looking beyond these individual shows. My goal is to find people who are a strong long-term fit with Dances With Tech—people I can invest in, train over time, and eventually trust to take on more responsibility and independently film performances and projects.

Priority application deadline: September 15, 2026.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis after September 15 until the positions are filled, so interested applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Pay: $20/hour

This is an in-person internship in the Phoenix Metro area, with projects taking place at theaters, studios, rehearsals, performances, and other arts venues. You must have your own reliable transportation.

I am looking for:

The most important qualification is not a perfect filmmaking resume.

It’s an understanding of dance and movement.

You must have meaningful experience with dance through dancing, choreographing, teaching, studying, production work, or another substantial relationship to the field. You do not need to specialize in any particular genre.

Dances With Tech regularly documents professional contemporary dance, jazz, hip hop, house, ballet, multicultural dance forms, and other movement practices. Sometimes we also conduct interviews and film art, immersive media, theater, and other kinds of live events.

You need to know:

When you film dance, you’re not just pointing a camera at a stage. You need to understand how movement works well enough to anticipate what might happen next and make decisions in real time.

That includes understanding:

  • How dancers travel through space

  • Movement phrasing and musicality

  • Entrances, exits, formations, and partnering

  • When to follow movement and when to hold the frame

  • How close you can get without cutting off important movement

  • How bodies move into, through, and out of the camera frame

  • How your framing choices change the way choreography is experienced on screen

I can help teach and strengthen technical camera skills. You need to bring a genuine understanding of and passion for dance.

You Might Be a Great Fit If You Are:

  • Thoughtful, observant, and curious

  • An excellent communicator

  • Reliable and consistently on time

  • Comfortable taking direction and incorporating feedback

  • Self-directed once you understand what needs to be done

  • A true team player and collaborator

  • Willing to pitch in wherever needed during a production

  • Calm and adaptable when live events change quickly

  • Excited about cameras, media, and technology

  • Passionate about dance and live performance

  • Interested in developing professional dance cinematography skills

  • Respectful of the artists, cultures, communities, and movement traditions you are documenting

You must have some previous hands-on video production experience. This is not a learn to use a camera internship.

Experience with Sony digital cameras—particularly Sony Alpha or Sony FX-series cameras—is strongly preferred. You do not need to know every setting already, but I want to know what cameras you have used and what you currently feel comfortable doing independently.

What You’ll Learn and Do:

This is a hands-on professional training experience using real equipment on real productions.

Depending on the project and your experience, you may work with:

  • Sony FX-series digital cinema cameras

  • Sony mirrorless cameras

  • Professional lenses

  • Tripods and fluid heads

  • Multi-camera performance setups

  • Professional audio recorders

  • Soundboard feeds and wireless audio equipment

  • Production media and file-management workflows

You’ll develop experience with:

  • Filming professional dance performances

  • Filming rehearsals and works in process

  • Choosing camera positions based on choreography

  • Wide, medium, close-up, and tracking coverage

  • Following dancers while maintaining intentional composition

  • Anticipating movement and musical cues

  • Working within multi-camera productions

  • Camera setup and breakdown

  • Audio recording

  • Media management

  • Communicating with other camera operators during live events

  • Working professionally with dancers, choreographers, presenters, venues, and other collaborators

As your skills grow, the goal is for you to take on increasing responsibility and eventually be able to film select Dances With Tech performances and projects independently.

How We Work

At Dances With Tech, we approach media work with curiosity, care, collaboration, and respect.

That means staying open to learning, listening to the artists and communities we work with, respecting the cultural histories behind the dance forms we document, making technology feel approachable, experimenting creatively, and reflecting on how we can keep improving the way we work together.

I’m looking for interns who want to be active collaborators — not just people who show up, operate a camera, and leave.
